ok breaking news:
THE SUN ISN’T RESPONSIBLE FOR DETERIORATING YOUR HEALTH.
Honestly? It’s the opposite.
If you recently participated in my free sunshine healing challenge on telegram, you know we were chatting ALL things boosting your health with the sun!
Unfortunately, it has become big business to demonize the sun. We get told: go to the dermatologist annually. Get checked. Put on sunscreen. Now what you decide to do here is ultimately your choice, but I want to help reveal that almost EVERYTHING we are taught health wise from preconception and birth puts money in big business/pharma pockets and is often NOT BENEFICIAL for our health
When it comes to sunscreen, unfortunately this often can do us more harm than good for a few reasons:
1. Most sunscreens have toxic ingredients, hormone disrupters, and cancer causing chemicals and then we lather it on our largest organ, the skin
2. The constant message we hear from the education system, media, and many doctors is “warning us” against sun exposure and that we need sun protection
Malignant skin cancers comprise only 6% of the overall number of skin cancer cases in the US each year . Of course 6% is more than 0 but then we need to understand more of what contributes to cancer… The truth about sunscreen is at best it only prevents sunburn. It cannot, and does not prevent the rarest and only true, fatal form of skin, cancer, malignant melanoma. There has been no conclusive association ever between sunburns and melanoma. So why are we told sunscreen prevents skin cancer? If anything sunscreens contribute. Regular exposure everybody to the germicidal wavelength of the UV light of the sun helps to regulate/mitigate germs, mites, molds, viruses and pathogens. It’s VERY important for disease prevention Before antibiotic drugs were discovered and normalized, the healing power of SUNLIGHT was favored by the medical community worldwide and used for infectious disease (known as heliotherapy).
By 1933, there were over 165 different diseases that were priced to be relieved or cured by sunlight . Interestingly the suns healing rays remained ineffective if the patients wore sunglasses! This may be surprising info, but sunglasses can block important rays of the light spectrum. In addition, contacts will also impede this maximum absorption of rays. I always suggest blue light blockers for wearing in the evening if you want to have protection in the home with blue light exposure after sunset- I will link my favorite! We don’t typically use sunscreen unless I know we will be in the sun all day and want to prevent sunburn on kids, but I like non toxic PUFA free brands if you need one! Here are a couple I like (sorry I don’t have discount codes!):

So how does sunlight support your hormones? Your hormones are primarily set by the circadian rhythm. Your hormone called cortisol rises in the morning in flow with the sunrise. Then melatonin hormone elevates in the evening as the presence of blue light decreases and disappears after sunset. When cortisol is artificially elevated from getting on your computer, on your phone, fluorescent lights, coffee and skipping breakfast and not synthesizing with morning light signals, our hormones become imbalanced. At night, this blue light exposure can suppress melatonin release from the pineal gland, impacting sleep, detox and the immune system. Our steroid hormones like cortisol start out as pregnenolone, the mother hormone, which then gets filtered into other steroid hormones, like DHEA, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone based on the body’s needs. However, if we have things in our life, that demand extra cortisol (like stress!), the levels of the other steroid hormones will suffer, which is known as “pregnenolone steal”.
GOOD NEWS THOUGH! Sunshine and UV light can help balance hormones AND can change their activity in the body. This is so important for us to be utilizing because we can throw bioidentical hormones or other hormone support at our body all day, but if we aren’t honoring our own human biology, we likely won’t have lasting results!
Studies have also found that exposure to the sun and UV light increases testosterone production in men and helps with hormone production and regulation in women. In addition to UV light exposure, increased attraction between male and females, as well as sex drive was found. Two built-in programs on the skin, activated following exposure to sunlight, are in place to protect against DNA damage but also activate the endocrine system What does this mean for you? Getting in more sungazing exposure around sunrise and sunset, and limiting your blue light exposure helps support your endocrine system, relieve fatigue, and can boost libido too. How can you start harnessing all this goodness from the sun? Try to be outside as much as possible during the day and start sungazing during the sunrise and sunset. During this time, the UV rays allow you to look directly at the sun, but I do not recommend starting with this approach unless you start small. Start with ten seconds of looking at the sun during sunrise and sunset with your feet grounded to the earth increasing in ten second increments per day. This would lead you to reach 15 minutes in 3 months and is based on a protocol from Hira Ratan Manek. I highly suggest using the D minder app for support with this too and to track the amount of Vitamin D exposure you are getting.
